CPU only: these are normal VPS plans without a GPU. We have not measured tokens per second. Models above 8B are marked slow because CPU speed drops fast with size. Plans with the exact RAM needed have no headroom; pick one size up if you can.
How we work it out
- Weights: the download size on the model's ollama.com tag page (q4_K_M, q8_0, fp16). Every size links to its source in models.json.
- Context (KV cache): 2 × layers × KV heads × head size × 2 bytes per token, from the model's config.json on Hugging Face. This is an estimate. Gemma 3 uses sliding-window attention, so it needs less than we show at 32k.
- Price: the monthly price after any intro or promo period, ex VAT. The intro price, its length and the commitment are shown under the plan name. Plans whose provider page does not show the price after the promo are left out: Contabo Cloud VPS 4, Contabo Cloud VPS 16, Contabo Cloud VPS 18.
- System: a flat 1.5 GB for Linux and the runtime (Ollama or llama.cpp).

Questions
How much RAM do I need to run an LLM on a VPS?
Roughly the model's download size, plus room for the context (the KV cache), plus about 1.5 GB for the system. Qwen3 8B at Q4 is 5.2 GB on Ollama, so with an 8k context it needs about 7.9 GB. An 8 GB plan is tight; 12 GB is comfortable.
Will it be fast?
On a normal VPS the model runs on the CPU. Small models (1B to 8B at Q4) give usable answers for one person. Larger models work but slowly. We have not measured tokens per second yet, so we only flag models above 8B as slow.
Where do the model sizes come from?
From the tag pages on ollama.com (q4_K_M, q8_0 and fp16 tags), checked on 21 October 2026. The context memory is our estimate from each model's config.json on Hugging Face.
What does EU-owned mean here?
The company you sign with, and any parent named on its own legal pages, is in the EU. 'EU datacentre, not EU-owned' means the plan can run in Europe but the company is not (for example a US company).
