Best VPS for Claude Code and AI agents
AI agents don't need a big server: the model runs at Anthropic or OpenAI, your VPS only runs the tools. 8 GB is enough for most people, 16 GB if several agents and a browser run all day. Here's what our own agent box actually uses.
What our 24/7 agent server uses
- Server: Netcup VPS 2000 G12.5: 8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB disk, €22.62/month (12-month term).
- Runs all day: two Claude Code sessions (one controlled from Telegram), MCP tool servers, a shared Chromium browser for web tasks, and cron jobs (this site's price scraper and network monitor).
- RAM: about 4 GB used of 15 GB. Biggest users: the browser (~3.5 GB), MCP servers (~1 GB), Claude itself (~0.7 GB).
- CPU: load average 0.1–0.4 on 8 cores. Agents mostly wait for API answers.
- Disk: 16 GB used of 251 GB.
Measured on our server on 3 October 2026. Your numbers depend on what your agents start (browsers, builds, databases).
4 GB: 1–2 agents, no browser. Bots, Claude Code over SSH, cron jobs.

Setup tips from running agents 24/7
- Run each long-lived agent in its own tmux session (or a systemd service) so it survives disconnects and restarts.
- Give agents scoped API tokens and keep secrets in files the agent is told never to print.
- Add swap on 4–8 GB servers; browsers spike memory.
- Pick a location near you for snappy SSH, and back up the server's work folders off-site every night.
- Same advice works for OpenClaw, Codex and other agents that call a cloud model: the server runs tools, not the model.
Questions people ask
How much RAM do I need to run Claude Code on a VPS?
Claude Code itself is light: on our server all Claude processes together use about 0.7 GB. The RAM goes to what agents start: a headless browser took 3.5 GB on our box, MCP tool servers about 1 GB. Rule of thumb: 4 GB without a browser, 8 GB with one, 16 GB for several agents running all day.
Does an AI agent VPS need a GPU?
No. Claude Code, OpenClaw and similar agents send the thinking to the model provider's API; your server only runs the tools, files and browser. A normal shared-CPU VPS is enough. You only need a GPU if you run the model itself (local LLMs).
How much CPU do AI agents use?
Very little most of the time: agents mostly wait for API answers. Our 8-core server sits at a load of about 0.1–0.4 while running two always-on Claude sessions, a shared browser and scheduled jobs. Cheap shared vCPUs are fine.
Which is the best VPS for Claude Code?
For an always-on box, a 16 GB plan with a monthly price you can live with. We run on Netcup VPS 2000 G12.5 (€22.62/month, 12-month term). If you only want to try it, pick an hourly-billed plan and delete it after a week.
Is a VPS better than running agents on my laptop?
For agents that should work while you sleep, yes: the server is always on, has a fixed IP, doesn't drain your battery and you can reach it from your phone (we control ours through Telegram). For one-off coding sessions, your laptop is fine.
