Which one should you pick?
Pick Hetzner if price per GB matters and your users are in Europe.
Pick DigitalOcean if you need US, India or Australia regions, or you want its managed products and a simple interface for a team.
Yes, at every size we track. On 4 November 2026 a 16 GB DigitalOcean Basic Droplet cost $96/month (about €85.88), Hetzner's regular-performance CPX42 (16 GB) cost €69.99, and Hetzner's cost-optimized CX43 lists at €15.99 (about 5.4x cheaper than DigitalOcean, but it was sold out when we checked). Hetzner prices exclude VAT.
Did Hetzner's price increase close the gap with DigitalOcean?
Partly. Hetzner raised cloud prices on 15 June 2026; the CPX42 (16 GB) went from €25.49 to €69.49/month. DigitalOcean is still about 1.2x that CPX42 price at 16 GB. Hetzner's CX line is far cheaper, but stock is limited.
How much traffic does each include?
DigitalOcean's Basic Droplets include 4 TB (4 GB RAM), 5 TB (8 GB) and 6 TB (16 GB) of outbound transfer, and inbound is free. Hetzner says cloud servers in its EU locations include at least 20 TB. Hetzner US locations include at least 1 TB.
How is billing different?
Both bill by the hour or second with no contract, so you can delete a server and stop paying. DigitalOcean also offers monthly spend caps and promotional credits for new users; the amount changes, so check its page.
Where are the data centers?
DigitalOcean: US, Canada, Europe, India, Singapore, Australia. Hetzner cloud: Nuremberg, Helsinki, Singapore. If you need servers in the US, India or Australia, DigitalOcean covers more regions. Hetzner is stronger in Europe.
Which should I pick?
Hetzner if price per GB matters and you are in Europe. DigitalOcean if you want US or Asia-Pacific regions, a larger managed-services range (databases, Kubernetes, App Platform) or a simple interface for a team.
